What We Do

For over 40 years, Superstition Community Food Bank has been serving the food insecure in Apache Junction, Gold Canyon, Northwest Pinal County, and East Mesa. We help those in need in our community primarily through these four food programs.

Emergency Food Assistance (TEFAP)

The Emergency Food Assistance Program is just what it sounds like. Individuals and families receive food to help them get by.

Qualified clients can visit twice a month to receive a variety of groceries including:

  • Meat
  • Bread
  • Canned goods (beans, veggies, fruit, soups)
  • Non-perishable food (rice, beans, pasta)
  • Fresh Fruits
  • Fresh Vegetables
  • Desserts

When available, they will also receive:

  • Milk
  • Cheese
  • Eggs
  • Hygiene Items (detergent, cleaning supplies, and personal hygiene items)

This program helps those having to make the difficult choices of paying rent, utilities, medicine, or medical care vs. putting food on the table.

We have been told time and again how this program is the only reason folks have any food in their home.

This is our largest program serving 44,301 individuals in 2023.

 

Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP)

 The CSFP Programs works to improve the health of low-income persons at least 60 years of age by supplementing their diets with nutritious USDA Foods.

Once a month, those that are on our “Senior Program” come for an additional food box filled with high protein, high fiber, and nutrient dense food.

  • Tuna, Salmon or Chicken (canned)
  • Beans (dry or canned)
  • Fruit (fresh or canned)
  • Veggie (fresh or canned) 
  • Dry Milk
  • Cereal
  • Peanut Butter
  • Nuts
  • Fruit Juice (apple or orange)
  • Fresh Meat (on occasion)

Because of the overwhelming need and popularity of this program we currently have a waiting list.

We serve 130 participants on a monthly basis and have 85 on our waiting list.

 

Making Holiday Meal Boxes

Holiday Meal Boxes

Holidays can be a depressing time of year for those facing food insecurities. We try to lift the spirits of our clients by offering holiday boxes for:

  • Easter
  • 4th of July
  • Thanksgiving
  • Christmas

We include the main protein like hot dogs, a turkey or a ham…and then throw in the rest of the festive fix’ns.

These boxes are tailored to feed a family of four.

Our goal is to bless 300 families for each holiday listed. Program cost $20,000.

 

Student Backpack Food Program

Thanks to a generous $20,000 donation from one of our beloved donors, we kicked off the student backpack food program last school year.

We have partnered with Apache Junction Unified School District (AJUSD) to provide “Backpacks of Food” to students enrolled in this program. A student can self-enroll, be parent enrolled or have a teacher or school staff enroll them if they realize a need for weekend food assistance is needed.

Many student rely on free-daily breakfast and lunch provided by our schools.

Our backpacks include enough food to make a few healthy meals  while the student is home over the weekend.

That way, kids return to school on Monday, ready to learn!

Backpacks include:

  • Breakfast items like; Cereal, Instant Oatmeal, or Granola Bars
  • Instant Mac ‘n Cheese
  • PB&J Sandwiches (or Supplies to make)
  • Instant Ramen, Ravioli’s or Canned Soups
  • Milk (dry or boxed)
  • Fruit Juice (apple or grape)
  • Fruit (fresh or canned)
  • Snacks

Program Cost $25,000.
